History
Known historically as Hilltop View, the Kuempel Haus is a beautifully restored two-story Victorian home located just four miles east of Pflugerville. Nestled on 22 acres of Texas countryside, the home honors its rich heritage while offering a welcoming venue for gathering, celebration, and connection today.
Built in 1904 by George Kuempel, Sr., a German immigrant and skilled organ and cabinet craftsman, the home has remained in the Kuempel family for generations. His remarkable craftsmanship is evident throughout the house, from the intricate woodwork adorning the exterior to the detailed finishes found within. More than a house, it has long been a place where family, community, and tradition come together.
From 1920 to 1979, the home was occupied by Selma and Grover Kuempel. In 1974, their daughter, Winnie Mae Murchison, and her husband purchased the farm, continuing the family's stewardship of the property. In recognition of its continuous family ownership, the farm received the prestigious 100-Year Land Heritage Farm Award. The home's significance was further honored in 1986 with the placement of a Texas State Historical Marker.
In 2013, George Kuempel's granddaughter, Debby, returned to the family homestead with a vision of restoring the home to its original beauty. As the renovation unfolded, many of the home's hidden architectural treasures were rediscovered and carefully preserved. What began as a labor of love soon became a mission to protect and share a piece of Texas history.
As Pflugerville grew from a small German farming community into a thriving city, Debby recognized the importance of preserving places that tell the stories of those who came before us. Today, the Kuempel Haus remains a cherished family home while also serving as a unique venue for others who value history, craftsmanship, and meaningful connection.
At the Kuempel Haus, we believe that hospitality is about more than hosting an event. It is about creating a space where people can celebrate milestones, strengthen relationships, share ideas, and make memories that endure long after the occasion has ended.
